I have written a series of posts looking at the Board Game Geek (BGG) top 100 games, checking to see if I had the game in my collection and talking a little bit about each one, if I could. At the end of the first twenty games covered I owned 8 of them, for a 40% ownership rate. Today I will cover games ranked from 80 up to 71 and see where the ratio ends up.
For all posts in this series check for the BGG Top 100 tag.
80: Russian Railroads
Released 2013
I do not currently own this, or know much about it. Move along, there is nothing to see here.
79: Patchwork
Released 2014
I was surprised to see this game was released in 2014. I picked up my copy last year, and it has become a staple light evening game. My wife and I can play 1-2 games and still have a conversation. It’s a two-player only game, but the game designer (Uwe Rosenberg) is quite well known for his various polyomino games. What’s a polyomino game? Glad you asked. 🙂 Imagine playing Tetris but on a board, and without pieces falling from the sky. The challenge for Patchwork is to place your scraps of fabric on your quilt, trying to cover as much area (and earn buttons!) while you do. It’s a delightful game with a number of different strategies that can lead to your wife beating you. Again. And over and over.
78: Troyes
Released 2010
I don’t know about this game, and do not currently own it.
77: The Quacks of Quedlinburg
Released 2018
So far in this series of posts I have mentioned several different game types. Pandemic was hand-management. Champions of Midgard is a worker-placement game. This is a “push-your-luck” game, and it’s fun! Oh, and I own the expansion too.
76: Architects of the West Kingdom
Released 2018
We saw Paladins in another post; this is in the same series, but I don’t own this one either.
75: Aeon’s End
Released 2016
I don’t own this one.
74: Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game
Released 2008
This is a game that I have owned, but do not currently. It is out of print (OOP) and highly sought after, which means that eBay and other marketplaces typically see very inflated prices. To get you the entire BSG series (it has three expansions) new in shrink would probably set you back at least $750-800 right now. 😯 I picked up the game at a local resale shop for about $45. When I got home, I found that there were two expansions in the same box with the main game. What a lucky find! I did ultimately figure out that some of the cards were missing, but I still traded away the game for a copy of the collector edition of Everdell and the first expansion for that game.
Why did I trade it away? As popular as the game is, I could not pass up the opportunity to cash in on the value. BSG takes at least three people to play (which I can sometimes manage) but also requires the players to have more than a passing familiarity with the TV series that the game is based on. Without that basic knowledge, there would be a super steep learning curve. For those reasons I decided to trade this away, but I’m still on the lookout for a cheap version if I can find one again…
Do I get credit for owning this game? I am going to say that I do not, since it’s not currently on my shelves.
73: Dominion: Intrigue
Released 2009
One of the expansion to Dominion which came in at #86 on the BGG Top 100. I own both.
72: Mombasa
Released 2015
I do not know or own this game.
71: Eldritch Horror
Released 2013
This is one of many games that I purchased after seeing it on TableTop, a YouTube show hosted by Wil Wheaton. The theme is classic (Cthulhu) and the implementation is brutal, but I can play this game solo so that’s a bonus.
The tally so far:
Games Mentioned: 30
Games Owned: 11 (36.6%)
Games Previously Owned: 1
After the first 20 games I found out that I owned 40% of them. I drop a little bit here because I’m taking the hit for trading Battlestar Galactica away and no longer own it. At this point is 40% a trend, or will my numbers go up as we travel further up the list?
